“HAMNET” - TCFF MINI-REVIEW
I had the privilege of seeing this opening night film at Twin Cities Film Fest back in October. Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel is earthy, sumptuous, and altogether splendid. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal bring their full selves to fill in the nooks and crannies of Zhao’s minimalist but rich vision. Zhao’s direction of the child actors here deserves to be in the same conversation as Steven Spielberg (who also produced, with Sam Mendes).
The supporting cast, which includes the great Emily Watson as well as the impressive, expressive young Jacobi Jupe, is phenomenal. All the craft is impeccable. Max Richter‘s score swoons with grief and impossible hope.
I really don’t know what else to say.
The final sequence is one I will think about for the rest of my life. It’s the reason we go to the movies… and the reason we go to the theater.
I can’t wait for you all to see this one.
HAMNET opens Wednesday, November 26.
