“NOBODY 2” - MINI-REVIEW
Take 2021’s NOBODY, add in one part NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION and one part stranger-in-town revisionist western, a la BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, multiply that by HOME ALONE 2/Rube Goldberg-style death traps, and you get NOBODY 2.
A solid actioner to end the summer that may be strictly for fans of the first one. The ever-affable Bob Odenkirk reprises his role as Hutch Mansell, a family man who is-SURPRISE-actually a badass government killer (they sure are a lot of these movies lately, aren’t there?), this time desperate for a break and longing to “make memories” with his family… but where Hutch goes, trouble follows.
Returning are Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Colin Salmon, and RZA, and joining them this time around are fun turns by John Ortiz (MIAMI VICE, AMERICAN FICTION), Colin Hanks (who reminded me of an evil sheriff Woody with an absolutely terrible haircut), and Sharon Stone as the big bad.
Arguably bloodier and definitely sillier than the first, there are a few dazzling sequences (the best being a fight on a pontoon boat) and it attempts to deepen its examination, such as it is, of Hutch’s rage, and how his actions for better or worse affect the well-being of the family unit. While I wouldn’t consider it essential filmgoing, I personally had fun, and it might be worthwhile if you love Odenkirk and enjoyed the first one… and if you’ve already seen the best of what’s currently in theaters.
