"WEAPONS" - SPOILER-FREE MINI-REVIEW
I will say nothing of the plot because it is best experienced cold, but WEAPONS is pure cinema. A handsomely mounted and altogether entrancing mosaic of mystery and madness, one that strings out many narrative threads, all centered around 17 school children fleeing their homes in the middle of the night, and weaves them together tighter than a snare drum, from its chilling opening all the way through to its all-out bananas finale.

Like Jordan Peele, who also got his start in sketch comedy before helming wildly original horror films, writer/director Zach Cregger follows up his impressive BARBARIAN with a film that earns its early aesthetic comparisons to MAGNOLIA and PRISONERS by masterfully blending confident formal technique (and the right amount of dark humor) in the service of jumpy, unnerving thrills. Top-shelf acting from Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams (who I wish people would talk about a whole lot more), and Amy Madigan make this a cut above your average thriller. It is not only one of the best horror films of the year, but one of the year’s best films, period.
WEAPONS is now in theaters everywhere.
